Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Are there any limits to major class action lawsuits against the government?English
1·2 days agoFor individuals there are things like police having qualified Immunity as individuals. So you can’t sue the police agency because of soverign immunity and the officer because of qualified immunity.
There are some limitations, but the bar is extremely high. Like you can sue an officer, but there has to be a massive mountain of evidence that their actions were not ‘doing their job’. There is no real chance of suing a SWAT team member for example, because they most likely have a warrant and expect violence to happen.
Government safety agencies shutting down businesses, newly formed potholes damaging cars, etc. are the common scenarios where the immunity makes some kind of sense because otherwise it would overwhelm the courts if every government action or lack of action could end up in court.
The bar is too high for a lot of those things though.

1·3 days agoOh great, in comes the aliasing!
Seriously, there are few games that don’t seem to have some weird aliasing when upscaled. Some only do it for really bright lights, some only do it when the background is out of focus, but there are only a couple of games where I didn’t notice upscaling was turned on.
Flickering edges is extremely distracting for me.

11·3 days agoThe first Alien movie was space truckers hauling cargo on decades long routes. That would absolutely be the type of ship that used extremely old and reliable tech for critical systems, like how modern aircraft and spacecraft use decades old computer components because it holds up better in those conditions and all the weird quirks are known and accounted for.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Under communism, what incentive is there to pursue highly dangerous or specialized fields?English
272·3 days agoWhy do people do things like rock climbing and other activities that have a high risk of injury or death when mistakes are made without being paid? Some people find dangerous stuff to be more enjoyable than less dangerous stuff.
Most dangerous jobs under capitalism are NOT well paid. People will do dangerous jobs for many reasons, but pay is rarely one of them.
Display name in settings to customize, you can use just about any characters and I think even emojies.

Mildly Infuriating@lemmy.world•Judge blocks Colorado law requiring health warning on gas stoves. He says there is no evidence that gas stoves cause or contribute to health issuesEnglish
4·4 days agoThat is exactly what I was thinking of.
We had an electric stove, but the water and central heating were gas. That way we still had heat if the power went out so the pipes wouldn’t freeze and we could wash things. If the power went out more frequently we might have gone with a gas stove too.

173·4 days agoI could see requiring specific ventilation requirements to install gas stoves to reduce the impact, or even ban within city limits, but a complete ban would negatively impact rural residences where electricity is not as accessible and reliable for power.

1·4 days agoI like sex.
I don’t like companies forcing sex on me so they can collect data to sell ads.
When the discussions about AI are about the latter, I’m just going to say I don’t like it without needing to clarify.
So, what is it intended for then?
I know the real answer is sucking up data, but what is the supposed benefit for users?

4·4 days agoThat’s gonna be a no from me, dawg.
If I like it, up vote.
If I am ambivalent but like that they are contributing in a constructive or humorous way that is a net positive, up vote even if I don’t care for it or agree with it.
If it has misinformation, racism/sexism/etc., is over the top hostile without justification, or is otherwise a net negative to discussion then down vote.
If I’m not sure if it is being sarcastic I tend to not vote. Poe’s Law is like Brannigan’s law, hard and fast.
