81·9 months agoAnd thinking of it this way… if you cash out and lock in losses and stop investing, you’re likely to never or greatly delay your retirement. If you keep investing, even with catastrophic losses in the market, you’ll be buying at the bottom and if you’ve still got enough time before retirement, you should still make it.

7·9 months agoRemoving the need to do any research is just removing another exercise for the brain. Perfectly crafted AI educational videos might be closer to mental junk food than anything.

I’m not here to talk to your fucking chatbot I’m here to talk to my friends and family.

I miss clear plastic cases. That was the peak.
Honestly this has kind of been reassuring as it seems that things that are behind the scenes are as dumb as what’s on the surface.

22·11 months agoExecutive Orders are closer to press releases than they are to law. They can say pretty much anything - whether those things are enforceable or even consistent with reality is up to the courts.
“he has to” does he though? He has enough money for him and his entire lineage to live lavishly for eternity. He can dip out today and stop working forever, relax on a beach, and disconnect from the world like Tom from MySpace did.
He’s not being forced to do anything.

1·1 year agoMost people (I hope, I don’t tune in too much) deny that the climate is changing. They just deny that human activity is causing it.
So they see all the wildfires and hurricanes and heatwaves and biodiversity collapse and coral bleaching and give a big shrug and “eh, whaddyagunnadoaboutit”
They don’t care about hypocrisy.

Technology@lemmy.world•A PR disaster: Microsoft has lost trust with its users, and Windows Recall is the straw that broke the camel's backEnglish
151·2 years agoA couple people recommended Fedora spins but I’d recommend just sticking with the big distros (that have up-to-date graphics drivers readily available - so not Debian.) A lot of the gaming-focused distros are only saving you a few terminal commands and increase your risk of running into issues; they’re good, but they may not be as 100% stable as you’ll find in major long-running distros like Fedora or Mint.
I have settled on Fedora with KDE Plasma. Here’s basically everything I copy pasted for gaming:
# install steam, discord, nvidia drivers sudo dnf install https://mirrors.rpmfusion.org/free/fedora/rpmfusion-free-release-$(rpm -E %fedora).noarch.rpm https://mirrors.rpmfusion.org/nonfree/fedora/rpmfusion-nonfree-release-$(rpm -E %fedora).noarch.rpm -y sudo dnf config-manager --enable fedora-cisco-openh264 -y sudo dnf update -y sudo dnf install steam discord akmod-nvidia xorg-x11-drv-nvidia-cuda # install bluetooth Xbox driver sudo dnf install git dkms cd /tmp git clone https://github.com/atar-axis/xpadneo.git && cd xpadneo sudo ./install.shI also had to enable Legacy X11 App Support through the settings gui so that Discord could receive push to talk presses without having focus.

12·2 years agoYup. Realistic result of things becoming automated is that we have several decades of social strife grappling with the fact there’s too many people for the amount of human labor actually needed, until there’s enough possibly violent unrest for the powers that be to realize "oh, maybe we shouldn’t require people to have jobs that don’t exist "

Technology@lemmy.world•Linux May Be the Best Way to Avoid the AI NightmareEnglish
10·2 years agoAs of the last few days I’ve been trying out Linux gaming for the first time, and the prospects seem really good. ProtonDB suggests all games I care about are native or run fine and I’ve tested several, and I was able to use bottles to get an old MMO I play running incredibly easy.
Only thing I really have to dual boot for is Valorant.

11·2 years agoOh my god dude renting has been a thing for millenia.

We were too addicted to AI slop to save ourselves.
Actually no, no one was addicted to AI slop, it was just shoved into every product so that huge companies could make a profit and everyone hates it.
But wait! The huge companies are losing tons money on this.
Why did we destroy the planet again???
