  • Anything can be a server really, including your toaster: https://laughingsquid.com/netbsd-toaster/

But typically, servers are built with more performant and reliable hardware in mind. The kinds of servers your PC or phone talk to when checking your email or watching a video are rack mounted and basically look like a pizza box

And a rack can have dozens of these stack on top of one another, and a data center can have hundreds or thousands of racks.

But nothing is stopping you from treating your home PC as a server. The software is the same since the same kinds of chips are in both your PC and the rackmount servers (generally). Running Linux on your desktop/laptop can allow you to do normal computer stuff, AND also share files, host a personal blog, share a printer, run a bittorrent tracker, or a tor relay, or even your own email. Some of this is even possible in Windows versions that aren’t “Server”.

  • Hey Mods: FWIW, this comment wasn’t advocating violence. There is a stark difference between a call to action, and a call to apathy. It was tongue-in-cheek describing perhaps trying to make generalizations about certain methods of political change being ineffective with a sample size of one is just bad science. More data is simply needed.

More philosophically, I am vehemently against the idea that violence doesn’t solve problems or it is somehow taboo because it is a absurd to believe. These are comforting lies we tell ourselves when the state’s monopoly on violence is used all the time to solve problems. Not much happens in history without consequences that draw blood. And it is pants-on-head crazy to pretend that isn’t the true.

All of that said, of humanity’s previous attempts to enact social change, usually a lot more of the aristocracy needs to be personally affected in not so pleasant ways. I don’t really think this event was even an attempt at change. And since no one else has really tried to copy the alleged killer, and it is unlikely that anyone will, even if this was intended as change, no change is gonna happen. And so here we are, not really all that sad about the dead dude because of what he represents, but also not all that happy that there was another dude running around gunning people down, even if we’re pretty indifferent about who he gunned down

  • It is a mix of ignorance, control, fear, and compliance. In finance in particular, insider threats are a real thing and it leads to the exact kinds of situations you’re describing. The cognitive dissonance of trusting someone enough to pay them a salary and deploy code to production (after peer verification), but not trusting them enough to manually touch a database is real. And it is the result of mitigating company risks, and following laws and regulations. No, it doesn’t make any sense. Yes, it should all be aligned, but you know, humans. All of that said, sometimes people do dumb things unintentionally, and the controls are there to mitigate those instances, too. Ultimately, you just deal with the bullshit because fighting it does no one any good. The powers that be only care about making money. And if you, peon developer, need to jump through a bunch of bullshit hoops in order to do your job, management doesn’t give a shit. That is what they are paying you for, after all.

  • If you get a Quest 3, it should play those kinds of games stand alone, no problem. No gaming laptop required. If it is going to be a more graphically intense game, or the games are only on Steam or whatever (so needs Steam Link), you are going to need a gaming laptop with a discrete GPU (released from the last 3-4 years). To do the wireless link, you’ll need a wifi6 capable access point/router, and wifi6 capable chipset in the laptop, or a dongle, or a gigabit ethernet cable from the laptop directly plugged in into the access pointer/router.

  • The incident still appears to be a professional hit (as of this comment).

A professional hit would have had some plausible confusion if it was suicide, such as defenestration that the ruski’s like to do. Or he simply would have disappeared. The US has no shortage of gun enthusiasts and youtube is a great teacher. It doesn’t make sense for a business associate or rival to inflame the masses and increase the likelihood of copycats since it directly affects their class. All of these fucks are in it together and they protect their own.
