Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Imagine the US holding a "Cost-of-living crisis" protest of 100+ million. Even the army and police protest. You are tasked with making *the* list of demands. What would be on this list?
5·2 hours agoOff the top of my head …
- free public health care for all.
- forgive all medical debt
- free public education for all, including college.
- forgive all student loan debt
- universal basic income
- more public housing. Homes are owned by the people who live in them, or the state. No profit seeking private orgs.
- close the “buy borrow die” loopholes, where people get untaxed loans to access their wealth without paying taxes
- more tax on the wealthy
- look into making property tax progressive like income. That is, the first $nnn of your house is untaxed, the next chunk at some percent, the following chunk at a greater percent, and so on.
- all Republicans removed from office. They are barred from government positions for life, as well as any private role with decision making power.
- break up mega corps. Disney, Microsoft, Amazon, etc. Their current leadership has their wealth seized, and they are barred from leadership positions for life.
- invest heavily in public transit and safety improvements to existing roadways. Cars are literally killing us as well as sapping our resources.
- mandatory profit sharing for employees.
- mandatory pay transparency
- maximum pay gap between roles. No more janitor making $7/HR while the CEO makes $300/hr
- accounting hijinks to pretend like your org made no profit, or “they’re not employees they’re contractors” are punishable by seizure of all wealth and a prohibition from similar roles for life
- come up with something so venture capitalist bros aren’t deciding the future, if the above doesn’t somehow fix it.

News@lemmy.world•ICE agents reportedly detain wife of US soldier just days after their marriage
3·14 hours agoWell, yes. The only things that change people’s minds are peer pressure and horrific trauma. People generally believe what their trusted in-group folks believe. And given how many stories there’ve been like “my family was abducted by ice and i spent a month in jail, but i’d still support trump” I’m not sure about trauma.
One difference that sets maga types apart is their “in-group” is overflowing with liars, fools, and other scumbags. Healthier people consider better people to be in-group.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•For those of you with a living room or multiple rooms; do you have a TV in your bedroom? Why or why not?
2·16 hours agoTechnically yes, but it’s ancient and almost never used. Someone got me one of those toy NES things that’s plugged into it, but I don’t use it much
. I need to donate the tv (no one on free cycle offered to take it) or send it to an e-waste place. It’s very heavy so it mostly just sits there.

Technology@lemmy.world•Used EV sales spike alongside gas pricesEnglish
2·16 hours agoI just saw a play that has a plot point about how someone gets robbed by some racist, well connected shits, and the police won’t do anything to help. The closest he gets to justice is vigilantism, where he hunts down and shoots 3 of his assailants dead. Only then does anyone start to listen to him, but when he agrees to talk peacefully they shoot him dead.
I’m not sure “the only way you’ll get justice is with your own bloody hands” was the author’s intent, but that seems to be the message.

Some people are very fragile and have poor emotional regulation. When they see other people doing good, it makes them feel bad, so they lash out.
Environmentalism, biking, veganism, all commonly evoke this behavior.

Political Memes@lemmy.world•Could you imagine writing for the Onion right now?
111·18 hours agoThat would be even more depressing, somehow.
“National health care passes - Cancer, depression, and bankruptcy rates plummet”
Honestly, I’d accept Trump taking all the credit and putting his ugly face on every hospital if it meant good service

59·18 hours agoDo these stories change minds, or are conservatives such masters of cognitive dissonance that nothing at all will cause them to defect from their in-group?
I keep seeing job posts that have requirements like “must be excited about AI tools”. If the shit was good people would be excited on their own.
It’s all slop from the worst, soulless, people.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Why are rich old men still so power-hungry and greedy?
46·1 day agoIf I’d made 500k for a couple years I’d be happily retired at like 40. Buy a home for less than $1mm, then live off the interest and safe investments
Rich people are bad at money.
Sometimes the manual steps grow like weeds. Where I’m at now, they haven’t invested in automation much at all. Now deploys take all day. Making a code change is a sweaty manual regression search process. It’s bad.

Also when you say something like “I’ve never met an atheist who didn’t celebrate Christmas” you sound extremely, let’s say, provincial, and that may have adverse consequences for you in some social contexts.

23·2 days agoHello.
Also meet more people of various backgrounds.
New players really should be told to play Pathfinder 2e at this point, not D&D5e
It’s unfortunate that DND 5e is the sole mega popular game.
People who want fantasy tactical combat would probably do well with Pathfinder 2e. But people who just want to tell a fun story would probably have a lot more fun with something lighter, like Fate.
There’s so many games out there and most don’t get the love they deserve

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Why do some people with college degrees and an education, still act so fucking stupid?
4·3 days agoWhy would you expect them to be immune to stupidity?
In the Gameboy one , you can kill the chicken with the fire wand thing and then the swam stops.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Best or Worst case scenario how do you see the Lugi Mangionne case playing out? What do you think about him now being a millionare ?
8·4 days agoEvery jury I’ve been on has been full of really disappointing people. But I’ve only been on two, so it’s a small sample size.
DND is a weird mix of too many rules and not enough rules.

Coincidentally, I was taken as a plus-1 to a Broadway musical, “Ragtime”, this month. I normally don’t go out much for theater, but it was free so I went.
It wasn’t bad. The style of music isn’t my jam, but it had some fun parts.
Also interesting is the play’s message seems to be “the only way you’ll get something approaching justice is violence” and I’m not sure if that’s the author’s intent.
