I guess that’s fair. There’s a critical point where that happens though. Even if they doubled the amount of ads right now, I bet they wouldn’t lose too many people because there aren’t any real competitor platforms. The amount of youtube ads right now is still significantly less than the equivalent watch time of cable channels, for example. You can watch 20 mins of content and sit through maybe 3 5 second skippable ads, and 3 20 second ads or something? Still significantly less than tv where you have 15 mins of ads every hour.

I’m talking about purely in terms of ads on the video. Both youtube and content creators want as as much ad revenue as possible but not to the point where they lose viewership because of the quantity of ads. I’m not saying content creators are in the wrong, I’m just saying that they get paid based on ads, so of course they want more revenue. It’s just an analysis of the relationship, I’m not pointing blame towards anyone.

Honestly, there is plenty of stuff I’d pay for but I pirate if it’s difficult to access.

I guess the one difference is that I don’t think twitch ads are skippable while youtube’s ads are. I assume embedding the ad into the video would prohibit that. Hopefully youtube doesn’t do that because while the current ad situation is annoying, having only unskippable ads would be pretty unbearable.

Idk if that’s even a hot take. It’s something I’ve talked to several people about and honestly one of the reasons I don’t think lemmy will end up growing much past its current user base. Too much micromanaging when most people just want to see content that interests them.

While I’d absolutely love for there to be a youtube alternative, they have a pretty much complete monopoly on online video distribution. Hosting all that data is expensive so competitors would need some serious financial backing which would likely put the competitor service in the hands of a large corporation.

Competitors would be great but there isn’t another service that comes close to what youtube provides. You’d need it to be worth it for creators to jump ship or at least upload to multiple sites. There hasn’t been any real competition in the space because youtube is so far ahead of everyone else.

I know what you mean. You’re talking about an ideal reality. In the real world, people get fucked over when they’re fired, and ai will put a lot of people out of work. Before we can get near what you’re talking about we need widespread labor movements to ensure worker’s rights and to fight for worker-benefited automation among other things. Well… no. But even if viewers were, how do you go about ensuring that it’s abuse free? It’s not like you can just google the production company. There are plenty of times where there aren’t any publicly available allegations so you can never be sure. When it comes to amateur porn, how do you know if their partner is forcing them into it or not? There’s no way to prove anything for sure unless there is a public record of allegations.

It’s not. There’s no reason why headphone jacks would be outdated. They carry an analog signal to drive the headphones. With a dongle, you’re just converting that signal from USB-C. USB-C headphones carry the exact same signal and bluetooth is garbage for audio quality. 3.55mm TRS is the de facto standard for headphones in the consumer market. It really doesn’t get any simpler or cheaper.
