  • I do stuff like this all the time. Like if i bought a pool i wanted to estimates how much water it needes to estimate all the follow up costs, if i am cooking something i often switch between kg and g, if am measuring things i switch between cm, m and mm depending on what i am currently measuring all the time. E.g. i needed a new working plate in my kitchen, i wanted it precut to fit exactly in after moving some cabinets while still aligning the sink. The whole space was measured in meters, but the individual cuts were all measured in milimeters. I was able to do all of that in 5 minutes with one piece of paper for sketching and my head. (And it fitted down to the milimeter in the end).

  • ITT: Blatant ableism disguised as concerns.

Should you be allowed to have children if you are a known carrier of some bad but not inmediatly deadly risk gene like fragile x, chorea huntington, mucoviszidosis, diabetes 1 (let’s ignore the worsening of fragile x and chorea huntingtion across generations for a moment)? Should you be allowed to have children if you have trisomie 21, or some other mental disability? If you say no i think you are ableist and can’t comprehend that people with special needs are still people that can be happy and can have desires. If you say yes why can’t two cousins have a child? What if they have two forms of birth control and just want to fuck? What if they are the same sex? I my experience most people who are against two cousins having sex do not give a flying fuck about some theoretical chile but just think it’s icky. Which is a fair feeling you are allowed to have but should not be basis for a law.

  • Something i have thought about for some time. Do we only have one consciousness? Like if you literally split your brain in half via operation suddenly you got two brain halves tha’t can not communicate with each other in any way. Do you now have 2 personalities and consciousness? If yes, why don’t you have them before? Maybe you always have two but they are just in agreement. And why stop at two? There are some interviews with siamese twins (the teacher sisters for example) and it’s so interesting to see how they talk. They finish each other sentences which is natural i guess but they also say “ehh” when the other one doesn’t know a word. It’s like a single person talking. I am not arguing they are distinctive persons. Just some random thoughts.

  • Contact info gets hashed in a clever way which doesn’t send your info (although i guess phone number hashes could be brute forced?) Meta data is also not available. They have no way to know who you are talking to. The only info they have is that you logged ij with a ip at a time. I believe they can’t even reliable track how many messages you send. Even with a compromised server most of the magic happens in the open source client side app so that they can’t gather very much. I understand your concerns about popular centralized services but i really believe that they are unfound with signal.

  • Did we read the same article? The point is that for some people it resulted in no viral load even without drugs over a prolonged time.

In a study published last year, Goulder described how all five remained in remission, despite having not received regular antiretroviral medication for some time, and in one case, up to 17 months. In the decadeslong search for an HIV cure, this offered a tantalizing insight: that the first widespread success in curing HIV might not come in adults, but in children.

Instead, like Goulder, pediatricians have increasingly noticed that after starting antiretroviral treatment early in life, a small subpopulation of children then seem able to suppress HIV for months, years, and perhaps even permanently with their immune system alone.
