As far as I can tell, Trump’s mental decline is so advanced that he can no longer create coherent lies. Some of the messaging around the Iran was has been mindbogglingly and transparently stupid.
So I don’t think Trump will be limited by small details like blaming someone who is “on record for saying it was a bad idea”.
Vance famously said that Trump was America’s Hitler. And then when given the chance for power, enthusiastically became Trump’s VP. Vance is also quite intelligent, if lazy. Vance is obviously a nihilist opportunist.
So my money is on Vance not believing a word of it. But just saying it because Vance thinks it will give him votes when he runs for US President.
The problem is that Trump’s supporters are literally a cult. The GOP are the ones with the power to unseat Trump, and the GOP know that their voters will tear them apart if they unseat Trump. Hence this continuing clown show of least resistence by the GOP.
An alternative is Trump stepping down voluntarily. But in best narcissist style, Trump believes he is the best man for the job, any job. “Only I can fix it”. And the pathological lack of self insight only gets worse as Trump mentally declines.

The only case where Iran should not care about pissing off Trump, was if the US was totally annihilated. Trump is a madman with a nuclear suitcase.
But Iran does need to negotiate. They are being bombed quite a lot right now. Iran is not going to surrender, but they would prefer not to get bombed. Antagonizing Trump is not going to help Iran.

If Iran turns to piracy by threatening “pay or we sink your ships” at all other nations, then all other nations should just confiscate all Iran’s ships in return.
Oil revenues are 35% of Iran’s budget. This should not be a can of worms that Iran wants to open.

The Iranians essentially practicing piracy in the strait is unambiguously counter to international law (UNCLOS), and breaks one of the fundamental elements of how world diplomacy has worked in the modern world. What the Iranians are doing is in fact an act of war against all nations which ships the Iranian stop.
Countries like those in the EU are keeping a low profile right now, because Trump has made such a giant mess of the diplomacy. But long term, I can’t imagine they will let this fly.
Iran is stealing money from third parties, if Iran is going to toll all ships. There is no moral argument for Iran’s actions here. “US was mean to me” is not an excuse for Iran to be mean to other people.
