I can also confirm. I write software for a living. A hammer is a must-have.

I love how the post never mentions the country, but everyone just knows.

4·3 months agoI’ve got one of these, and I’m pretty sure I found a subreddit about people like us at some point. There are dozens of us. Dozens!

Steam Hardware@sopuli.xyz•Once again, looking for PS2 game suggestions!
2·3 months agoSome arcade-y faves of mine:
Gradius V: a classic horizontal scrolling shooter, it gets hard quickly! (This is the game series the Konami code originates from)
Neo Contra: a twin-stick shooter inspired by B-movies, also kinda hard, and incidentally also a series that made the Konami code famous.
The Red Star: a bit obscure I think. It’s a twin-stick with both shooting and melee. I like the girl’s fast melee moves a lot, you need to use combos to juggle your enemies. I think this one got a bad reception because it arrived quite late in the life of the PS2 and was a bit underwhelming graphically.

Linux@programming.dev•7 years later, Valve's Proton has been an incredible game-changer for Linux
9·5 months agoI made the switch a few months ago with a Win backup drive just in case. It sadly saved my bacon on a couple occasions. Still, I (mostly) use Arch, btw.
Relic released the Definitive Edition of Dawn of War last week. It ran with no issues until I started playing with a friend who’s on Windows. Then we encountered frequent game-breaking desync issues specific to Linux/Win crossplay. Not even a week after release, the devs pushed a hotfix for this (among other things).
It’s a good sign that gamedevs have started taking Linux compatibility seriously, and that makes me very happy!

At the very least spaciesist.
Boss, I can’t make it to work today. There’s a cat on my car.
Well don’t leave us hanging! Did you die?
It’s a common misconception that it was even called Ev to begin with. In reality, it used to be named Mt. Eh due to how underwhelming it is.

Technology@lemmy.world•A young computer scientist and two colleagues show that searches within data structures called hash tables can be much faster than previously deemed possible.English
162·11 months ago“Constant average query time” is not that hard to understand. It means that sometimes access time is e.g. linear, and sometimes you get your content before executing the code. With a hash table large enough and full enough, this can be used to fetch content seconds, minutes, days, potentially years before the program even exists. That’s one hell of a breakthrough.
