Reminds me of the time I ran a FreeBSD webserver from home, compiling Apache from source took the better part of a day. But still good times, learned a lot from that experience.

Today I Learned@lemmy.world•TIL the city of Amsterdam is actually built on millions of wooden piles instead of solid groundEnglish
6·11 days agoPersonally I prefer Utrecht or Leiden. Although Amsterdam has more to offer in terms of larger/more renowned tourist attractions, I’ve always enjoyed the vibe in those cities more. Amsterdam is too busy, it smells and it’s way too commercial for my taste.
But of course I’m probably biased, I grew up near Leiden and studied in Utrecht. So I spent quite some time there.
Most problems are caused on the longer term and that damage can be quite insidious. N2O deactivates vitamine B12, which ultimately causes nerve damage, especially for heavy users. Symptoms can be stuff like tingling extremities, muscle weakness and paralysis and can become irreversible with continued usage. The problem is that the early symptoms can be easily disregarded, while the damage is slowly building up.

Games@lemmy.world•We'll probably never see a Grand Theft Auto set in a futuristic city like GTA 2 because the team "hated it": "People didn’t connect with the game or its city"English
5·16 days agoThe gang wars mechanic put me off SA, same as the friends in GTA IV that keep demanding you go bowling with them while you are in a car chase with the police. It felt forced and screwed with the flow of the game by forcing you to stop whatever you were enjoying at that moment or deal with the consequences.
Vice City is also my favourite, great selection of music tracks, great 80’s vibes and it wouldn’t forcefully try to pull you out of your flow at random intervals.

4·25 days agoThere are different kinds of tests, but this is an example: https://www.healthcare.uiowa.edu/familymedicine/fpinfo/Docs/MOCA/MoCA-8.1-English-Test-2020.pdf

Patient Gamers@sh.itjust.works•Steam Replay is live and notes only 14% "of playtime spent by all Steam users" was for 2025 releases
0·28 days agoIt does depend on the game, Satisfactory for example uses UE5 (5.3.2) and runs perfectly fine for me without framegen at 5120x1440. Admittedly I run it on an RX 6900, so not an average card. But at the other hand it’s already an older one and that resolution approaches 4K.
Unless something changed fairly recently the game also doesn’t use Lumen by default, let alone raytracing. Was RT made mandatory in later UE5 versions? Because it’s definitely not mandatory for every UE5 version.
UE5 is by no means a lightweight engine, but I do wonder how many of the issues are caused by lack of optimisation.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Do you feel sad about the fact that you'll probably die within 100 years (or less) and you (well... that's most of us tbh) can't do much to leave a significant positive legacy?
7·2 months agoI don’t care. Our civilization will collapse, the earth will become uninhabitable and the universe will die at some point. So whatever we leave behind ultimately doesn’t matter anyway. I try to make life as enjoyable as possible for myself and my GF and try to be a positive influence for my friends, family, colleagues and neighbourhood. When it’s over, it’s over and I’m not going to worry about what I’m leaving behind. I’m an insignificant speck in the grand scheme of things and I’m just fine with that.
No kids and no legacy to worry about sounds quite good to me actually.
What if I’m driving a clunker and my transmission doesn’t handle constant speed changes well making staying on the on-ramp lane a little risky?
Guess that depends on where you live. In my country that would make you an incompetent driver as it means you don’t look ahead and anticipate traffic enough if you constantly need to reduce speed. But on-ramps are at least around 200 meters long here, so you can spot traffic wanting to merge in time and for most cars that’s enough to get up to speed and merge smoothly.
Try the Dutch climate. Here everything above 28 degrees C is, in my opinion, unbearable.
My Nokia 7650 begs to differ.

I don’t know, but for me it was undiagnosed ADHD. 😋 Fortunately IT is one of the areas where lack of a degree isn’t a showstopper.
What? I make that kind of money by dabbling in Ansible, Python and Kubernetes. $5000 sounds pretty lowball for fairly niche knowledge like COBOL.

To be honest, Mint is no better in that regard on my laptop. Closing my laptop and pulling the power adapter always results in the system not going to sleep mode, but remaining active. Opening it will actually cause it to resume going to sleep. Really annoying.
