but what’s there to stabilize? It’s quite literally Arch Linux with a Hyprland config. The support for it, I imagine, will be dreadful. You can’t get support for it from the Arch Forums as they will NOT help you if it’s not actual Arch Linux and regardless of the fact this IS actually just Arch with a logo slapped on it the Arch Forums aren’t going to touch it.

Honestly the one Linux community that has been the nicest and most helpful for me has been the NixOS one…but I don’t use the official channels. I tried but like you said it seemed to be anything and everything EXCEPT actual Nix and NixOS.

outside of that your average NixOS user has been a pleasant experience to deal with.

Meanwhile if you step into the Arch forums you have like ONE moderator with the DBZ avatar that rules with an iron fist and I for one applaud them for it.

I actually daily drove it during Alpha for a bit but stopped using it after a couple Alpha releases because it got a bit worse with each alpha release and more slow. Haven’t tried the beta yet but will probably get around to it soon.

Killer feature? I mean if you want GNOME or a regular DE with tiling then sure…have at it. You’re not going to get anywhere near the caliber of customization you would have with say KDE Plasma or literally any other WM out there but the trade of is you don’t have to deal with config files for the tiling aspect. It’s a buggy mess though. With each added feature the bugs just increased which is sort of expected.

The last time I used it the shortcuts were a bit of a pain to get working correctly and the startup was slow. It does come packaged with its own file manager and terminal. The file manager isn’t anything special, but honestly the terminal isn’t that bad. If I recall the terminal doesn’t support images so if that’s something you want (like for me it is since I use Yazi) then I’d just uninstall it. I don’t think it has the option to style GTK stuff but I heard they might have changed that with the Beta.

It’s launcher is pretty nice and you can do a lot with it. naturally app launching but also web searching, calculator, file searching, etc.

I wish it had an option like KDE Plasma does for laptops where you can completely disable the touchpad if you have an external mouse plugged in instead of just disable while typing. But you can circumvent that if you know what you’re doing with like something like noinput cli or whatever or making a udev rule.

I think it still needs a wee bit longer to bake. If they can work out the bugs, speed it up a bit, and make the overall size of it smaller than KDE I would switch back to it. It’s pretty simple and bare bones but I mean for wayland your only options are pretty much Plasma or GNOME so having a third option is awesome.

yeah I was also thinking that. a light weight distro with like XFCE or just a barebones WM like DWM or Sway or whatever. It doesn’t need to do much, just run a couple things. so slapping KDE or even GNOME on it would be overkill.

yeah basically it locks it to your current build/system.

So for example I use it for my overall system config. I have a flake, a configuration.nix, and a home.nix all of which are tied to my git repo. I make a change to the system be it installing a package or modifying something or other I can then push that to my git repo. Say I want to take my system as is and put it on another pc/laptop I can then go on the new machine, clone my nix repo, and build it now that new machine is exactly the same setup as my main machine. Like a few weeks ago I put Arch on my main machine for a couple weeks and then went back to nix. It took less than 10minutes to install NixOS and get my machine back to where it was exactly prior to putting Arch on it.

For Dev work flakes allows you to bypass the whole “well it works on my machine” since you develop in flakes you can take that development environment anywhere and it’ll always work regardless of what machine you put it on.

Think of it sort of like a Docker container.

I got started on NixOS on a whim really. I distro hopped every so often and like a month ago I wanted to try something different. Already used Arch, Fedora, Ubuntu, Debian, etc but figured I’d give NixOS a shot.

At first I hated it and it just confused the hell out of me. Then when someone told me I should use flake for my config so I could through it in a repo it just clicked. Once you figure it out and “get it” it just becomes so easy. I’m still a noob at it but I absolutely love NixOS. It just makes everything so easy when you got everything in a flake with a config and home nix. Even backups are easy as you literally can just put it in your config to run. I even have it how where it’ll toss out old generations after 10 days automatically.

Plus the fact I can just use stuff without actually installing it is awesome. as a Dev NixOS is brilliant for that.

yeah it’s not going to be used for much. I was just thinking a browser like QuteBrowser, maybe Krita if it can do it, Wezterm, and of course remoting into on my main laptop so I can use it as a virtual second screen. that’s it.

So maybe another distro would be a smarter choice? like just a barebones Arch?

It’s not a problem for me just because of the cost. I want to play Expedition 33 but I’m not sure I want to pay $70 to do so.

I’m happy just playing my old ROM collections or booting up Cyberpunk or whatever. but now I just can’t justify dropping $70+ on a game anymore.

sigh, I’ll probably just end up going back to EVE Online.

Sonic Adventure 2 is just silly, it’s like a 10 to 15second loop of a slightly different version of the main theme but it’s got this like added guitar (I’m not a musician AT ALL) that just really kicks it up a notch. hell I even have the mp3 of it that i’ll listen on loop for a few minutes.

Also the original Apex Legends menu music and character selection music was VERY good.
