  • Automobile crash deaths are far more common in the US than in Canada — and the divide is widening.

That is the striking conclusion of a new study produced through a collaboration between the US Insurance Institute of Highway Safety (IIHS) and the Canadian Traffic Injury Research Foundation (TIRF). Its findings raise new questions about why Canada’s progress saving lives is not being felt south of border.

  • ARTICLE TITLE POLITICAL PARTY SPOILER ALERT

A jury convicted former Republican candidate Solomon Peña earlier this year of conspiracy, weapons and other charges in the shootings in December 2022 and January 2023 on the homes of four Democratic officials, including the current state House speaker.

Prosecutors, who had sought a 90-year sentence, said Peña has shown no remorse and had hoped to cause political change by terrorizing people who held contrary views to him into being too afraid to take part in political life.

This evil clown would have made a great fascist. Nice prison sentence - I like it.

  • “This list naturally de-legitimised concerns of already distressed staff,” said Dr Hossai Gul, a UTS researcher and representative for the National Tertiary Education Union (NTEU).

That statement is exactly right and points to a surprising lack of empathy in the handling of this process.

“It is simply not something that should be shared at a university training future psychologists — our academics in that department and in health were horrified.”

Hiring an outside firm to “help” with ostensibly positive advice for the bloodbath is horrible. I’m grateful the staff of the psychology department spoke up about this.

    • Do that task you’ve been dreading, like washing delicates, organising receipts for your taxes, or cleaning a bathroom.

EDIT: I got confused, forgetting that washing delicates implies delicate clothes - thank you fellow Lemmy-ers!

As an aside, I’m sure some people don’t wash thoroughly, but I imagine most do. I’m speculating here, so feel free to correct me if I’m wrong. But I imagine most people feel great about taking a shower and washing thoroughly for that fresh feeling. What prompted this outside firm to advise as such suggests they believe most people actually dread to wash thoroughly when showering. Could this be a case of projection, perhaps, on the part of the author who offered that advice?
