  • My main gripe is Windows Defender. I have an app that integrates with Home Assistant and Windows keeps flagging a component as a Trojan virus. Makes sense, as it’s supposed to access admin level functions to read some sensors and enable remote power control.

But for years I’ve seen MsMpEng.exe, or the antivirus, constantly scan my 4TB HDD, either looking for viruses or doing some stupid NTFS remapping thing. It’s loud and only spun up when idle on Win10, but became more aggressive on Win11 with less time to start scanning and not stopping when I move the mouse.

The latest development with breaking my app just means I’m more vigilant in turning the entire antivirus off when it turns on and starts scanning.

  • The only privacy-focused service is self-hostable, libre, open source and, often, free. Investing in a local server and running something like a SMB or CIFS sync to a hard drive you own is the best next step. Servers aren’t expensive, either. You can use a £100 potato or reclaim an unwanted PC. The only factors you should spare no expense in are the drives and their storage. Next important is power supply. Well-known Asia-based brands only.

Once you’ve got hardware, the software is fairly simple. I use Linux running Samba on my local network with Foldersync on Android devices occasionally uploading, but there’s also Syncthing (which I haven’t tried), Nextcloud (which has a database system that can be a pain, but is one of the nicest and complete cloud programs and has apps for everything*) and more.

  • Well, for my world it’s interesting because the passenger seat is just that. But before the evolution of tech and everything else heavily affected travel, the front passenger seat held importance in that the one who sits there can assist in reading a map, adjusting the passenger wing mirror, monitoring the side directly while parking or other tight manoeuvres, emotional support for police stops, handling a drink so the driver can hydrate without endangering anyone, an extra pair of eyes on the less vital areas etc… Now these benefits of a primary passenger are almost nonexistent, as better driver-side controls, digital maps, GPS and TTS, and stricter road safety laws (banning consumption while driving) reduce the need for an assistant driver.
