No one is forced to be straight… Most games don’t even have romances.
Like you think Doom Guy is straight because he’s clearly a Christian? When I control him, he’s the gayest queen in Hell. 🤷♂️
No one is forcing them to do anything. They can choose to play the game or to do anything else.
Oh and buddy they will yell about how much they won’t play a game and how their boycott will kill it while the game does just fine.
The addition of romance options in game needs to just be removed. It’s incredibly cringy and rarely ever adds anything to the narrative aside from side-plot fodder.
Leave relationships to The Sims and quit wasting the time that’s better spent making the game more stable and bug free.
Either get rid of it or make every romance option open to PCs regardless of character creation options.
I dunno what you’re saying about the Sims tho, the last time I did romance in the Sims I was killing all my spouses to collect types of death. Far more interesting than the average romance option in games.
In many cases, not even forced, just given the option to play as a non-straight character in a way that’s mostly irrelevant to the actual game!
I’m not aware of a single game that forces one to play as a homosexual. Anyone?
Can’t find any for explicitly homosexual male main characters, but Horizon Zero Dawn and The Last of Us both feature explicitly homosexual female main characters.
Aloy is a lesbian? Was that introduced in the second game? I’m not against it, just surprised
When playing the first game I just assumed she wasn’t willing to deal with guys’ flirting bullshit.
“The game is forcing me to fuck this man, repeatedly”
What?! That’s terrible! How?! How can I replicate that so that I don’t accidentally do it?!
Could I skip it? Yes, but I paid for this content so now I have to see it to get my money’s worth. It’s not my fault I’m doing it, it’s the woke™!
I have no problems with life is strange
Actually really enjoyed the first one. Haven’t played the others, though.
I dunno, most games the sexuality of the protagonist is completely irrelevant, and in those cases id tell both sides to stop whining or just play a different game
This is a case of double standards.
If you weren’t willing to call it out before when it was heavily one sided, you shouldn’t be calling it out now.
You’re making it relevant by calling it out at the worst possible time.
I’m not seeing the double standard there. Their overall stance sounds like they don’t gaf about anyone complaining about the sexuality of characters in video games because it’s often completely irrelevant to the game itself.
Or did I misunderstand and you mean that since they didn’t call out people complaining about a lack of gay representation they shouldn’t call out everyone complaining now that the complaints go both ways?
Why do we still attention to tiny loud minority of GamersTM who whinge about “go woke go broke” and yet these still games sell like hotcakes? Just tell them that if they don’t like the game, then don’t buy the game.
Tbh, I’m not even sure where most people get exposed to these whiny gamers. Maybe I’m just lucky that the places I spend time on online and offline don’t overlap much with these weirdly conservative gamers who seem to forget that the moral panic conservatives tried to use to ban games they love.
A lot of Facebook comments are filled with these people. Every once in a while I’ll go there and see an onslaught of people whining about it but generally I keep to saner places. Hell, a woman goes anywhere near a lead role and someone like Ben Shapiro, who has plenty of loyal followers, is right there to bitch and moan about it.
There are plenty of these people around, and I remember even in person when I was younger hearing about people whine about a single gay cahracter in a movie so it is not surprising at all.
I’ve noticed a lot of things liberals bag on conservatives for are things they don’t say IRL. The converse is true! We pick the most outrageous statements and say, “SEE! That’s what they’re all like!”
Literally I’ve talked to people like this. Usually when I was younger, but people aren’t known for growing up. And then there are Facebook comments that are just horrendous cesspools. Also the fact that 99% of conservative politicians are openly homophobic/sexist/etc. and that never seems to disqualify or register with their base and actually improves their chances.
No, many conservatives say some pretty awful shit on the regular and you’re either lying or ignorant.
I prefer to clown on them relentlessly and let them be aware that everyone thinks their opinion is stupid and childish
Allowing this to go unchecked or ignored is how we got here in the first place. “Just ignore the trolls” led to the trolls having actual societal inertia. It is no longer enough to just ignore them, they need pushback.
I don’t disagree. If they troll, troll them back harder. But the way the mainstream act is that these toxic GamersTM opinions have weight, when in reality their toxic views don’t even make a dent to popular opinions and sales of game developers.
“forced” to play
because the path of the gamer isn’t a choice™
I’d much rather play as a woman.
I’m cis, my character in Saints row ended up trans because I wasn’t a fan of dressing up a guy and wanted to dress up a woman.
still cis tho™
damn yall ain’t ready to unpack those feelings huh my bad
deleted by creator
Yeah, no. You don’t have to try to make everything into more than it is. I’d be perfectly fine being trans. No hard feelings. I’m not though, but I sometimes play female characters because I prefer looking at them. It’s not more than that.
Hi, I spent a few years unpacking those feelings to figure out that I like crossdressing more than I like being the gender opposite my birth. One of the things that made it more confusing in the beginning was the slew of internet comments I would read reinforcing that any gender nonconforming activity was a sure sign I was trans.
If you know the person irl and they consistently show signs of being trans I think it’s good to ask probing questions that may lead them there, but I don’t think it’s right to tell them who they are. Better for them to figure it out themselves. On the internet you definitely don’t know the person beyond a single post, or a few posts coming from their online persona (not their personal self). This means you have even less right to tell them who they are.
Especially with the TM I took your initial comment as a joke, which I don’t find super funny anymore personally but can give a half smile and single roll of the eyes. Your edit about people unpacking their feelings implies to me that you were saying it in earnest though, which is where I start to have a problem for the reasons above. Just in case you want some insight on why you may be downvoted so much.
yeah I have gender dysmorphia. Gender Dysmorphia that I don’t look like He-Man as someone assigned male at birth.
🙄
You sound like an AI slop caricature of a blue-haired teacher telling kids they’re trans.
🙄
Not everyone you disagree with sounds like AI slop.
Not by a long shot, but that person sure does.
Which LLM says things like “still cis though”?
The phrasing isn’t exactly dead on, but normal people don’t go around trying to convince others they’re trans for stupid reasons.
Games are not about you and the purpose often is to give you an experience that you wouldn’t have as yourself.
Depends on the game. Many games let you create a custom character and the character is defined by their actions.
Some games have zero character to the character you control.
Some are story based with strong characters where it isn’t about the player, sure, but those are less common than the ones that allow the player to either self insert or play a one dimensional archetype character.
What game?
Last of us part 2?
Do people really complain about playing as a lesbian? That’s like double the tits.
I did hear whining about having to play as a trans character though, despite the fact that you don’t. I can only imagine those people never played it and were just “hur dur big arms = man”.
Do people really complain about playing as a lesbian? That’s like double the tits.
Alright, I doubt you were going in this direction, but I’m going to rant anyway.
As a bi guy, I’ve been sick and tired of male fetishization of lesbians in media for years. It’s creepy. Just, they are not interested in you. Stop acting like you’re going to be the one to convert them into being bi. You aren’t.
Thank the stars that media is (slowly) growing out of this stereotype, because it’s not funny anymore, if was ever funny.
/ Rant over
Anyways, sorry to dump on your comment. It’s (hopefully) not directed at you. It just needs to be said somewhere
Part 1 too but only addressed in DLC.
I STILL won’t play a game where I’m a female protagonist. And this started back on a Tomb Raider demo disk 😑
…I’m simply not a female. Why would I pretend to be?
Gay I could work with. Not cause I’m Gay but because that’s an interior quality. Unless I am literally choosing dialogue boxes like
*Say nothing and start sucking his *****
Tell them about the great circle jerk of Rivendale back in 5000 Septimum
Im also not a wizard, gangster, alien, predator, space explorer, Dragonborn or soldier. Nor am I pretending to be when playing a video game.
Yeah, I never could play Mario because I’m simply not Italian.
I am half italian but couldn’t relate because I’m 0% plumber. Pipes just confuse me and I’m nowhere near athletic enough to do that kind of plumbing.
Pretty weird.
This is an unusual take in my opinion, if you’re being serious of course. Video games are all about pretending. I’m not a serial killer, but I’ve played one. I’m not a taxi driver, but I’ve played one. I’m not a plumber, but I’ve played one. It’s pretty odd to say “I can’t play Spyro because I’m simply not a dragon.”
Lmao are you 12 or Andrew Tate?
I’m curious, do you feel you have an inability to think about things from other perspectives in any other part of your daily life? Is abstract thought a challenge for you?
Why would I pretend to be?
you’re not pretending to be. you’re playing another character.
wait, what is an “interior” quality? so do you only play characters that have—or more likely lack—the same facial hair that you do?
do you have a six pack? cause a lot of game characters do and i don’t think you should play them unless you can cut glass with your abs.
what about hair and eye color? surely you don’t pretend to have different color hair, that’s disgusting; women do that eww very feminine energy.
and of course playing any superhero, magic character, any fantasy race or scifi species … all out of the question, clearly all of them exterior qualities.
I’m assuming—nay, concluding all of this because surely you’re the kind of guy who has consistent principles and this isn’t simply a case of making up a dumb excuse to sound barely more sophisticated than “but girls have cooties”
“Bro”
Said to every woman online. Not even an option.
And here you have a grade 5 meltdown that it’s an option at all to be wear the mask of the opposite sex.
The fragility: that force is strong with you.
Imagine hating women this much.
“Bro, I’m basically the same as Batman or Master Chief. I could be a medieval fantasy wizard or a cyborg assassin, because I know they have a dick and balls in there. But a woman? That’s too far man.”
You’re ok with pretending to be someone you’re not in every other game you play. You’re definitely not a hero, veteran, combat expert, scientist, alien, or machine, so why do you play those games?
“Well not now, but I COULD BE someday!”
- that guy probably
Well, I’m a scientist, and some people have called me machine or asked if I was an alien. Still don’t give a fuck as who or what I play.
That’s fucking stupid.
Weird incel take lmao
You are really missing out by refusing to play Portal.
I remember playing the first game when it was released in the Orange Box. I want to say I made it through at least halfway before realizing the player character was a woman. Not that it really makes any difference in the scope of the game, but they did a great job at presenting her as just another faceless silent protagonist.
Yeah, and she wasn’t sexualized or have any stupid stereotypes. Just a person doing a thing!
It only ever really comes up when GLaDOS is trying to body shame you. And that’s just because she’s throwing every insult she can come up with at you.
You see her through a portal in literally the first scene of the game. I’m surprised you missed it.
I went through it pretty quickly the first time. Saw the orange jumpsuit and assumed small framed man. Most games back then either let you know that you would be playing a woman on the box art or allowed for character customization and was probably an RPG.
It was a welcome change from playing the archetypical dude all the time.
I mean… I won’t willingly choose a female character to play as because of a bit of (what my trans roommate said was effectively) gender dysphoria. So like in Cyberpunk if I play the female V I feel weird because I have a harder time RPing a female character than a male character for some dumb little gaybrain reason. However I don’t need to RP Lara Croft… she just… is. Same with Aloy in Horizon. I couldn’t give less of a tittering fuck playing as those characters and actively enjoy it.
Saying “Nah women icky” and refusing to play ANY is just fucking weird dude
I almost never pick female character options in games for this reason. I’m not a woman. I am the main character, I don’t want to “be” a woman.
…but games where you don’t pick? Who gives a fuck, man lol. Do you not watch movies with female leads?? I am not the main character in those games, I am experiencing someone else’s story.
