Gotta cheat to win
It’s been like that for decades, Republicans are a minority who would all but disappear if they wouldn’t cheat
Also they’re mostly Christians, and lying and cheating is like your daily bread for Christians
Cheat to win, win to cheat.
It’s the only way they can win.
Why did the Dems come back?
Probably because their families and lives in general are there. Probably because these are relatively low level politicians and probably have other jobs there.
It’s easy to be on the internet and say they should just permanently flee their homes and lives.
They’re already doing more than the rest of this pathetic populace. Their party, and the rest of us, should be stepping up to help them instead of asking them to risk literally everything while we sit on the sidelines.
they had recessed but called a new session and put the dems under guard.
Because they work for the same masters
You know, I hate that they did this, but I hope it backfires completely. When gerrymandering, one unintended consequence is, when you dilute an area to add more seats in democratic areas, you make the “safe” areas more competitive sometimes. So, I’d love to see it have no effect on seats, or they actually lose seats.
I’m still not convinced the average American knows what’s going on. I’m talking specifically the people who only get their news from their uncle on FB, or from Fox News at the laundromat.
They don’t. And they won’t until it’s at their doorstep and it’ll be way, way too late by then.
Americans are ignorant and disengaged and the chickens are about to come home to roost. We’re in for a very, very difficult lesson.
Republicans accept plans to favorise republicans
After being enabled to do so by their Democratic colleagues
I’d love to hear from all those people downvoting you. Texas Republicans could not have done this without Democratic support, which they freely gave to pass this injustice.
Are these people mad that you’re shining a light on how eager these two parties are to subvert democracy?
Are they mad because the Democrats let them down again?
Are they mad that Democrats delayed the vote by leaving town for a couple of days?
Are they mad the Democratic party won’t just take off the mask already and admit they serve the same goals as Republicans?
I suppose it will remain a mystery.
they had recessed but called a new session and put the dems under guard.
They announced the new special session prior to the Democrats returning to Texas, the day the previous one failed without a quorum, and they were only being put ‘under guard’ after returning to the state and prior to the new session starting. They had one avenue to block this from happening and they voluntarily gave it up for absolutely nothing.
This sounds like some supposition. Announced. People are like well if this newspaper knew at this time then obviously the legislators would know sooner but no that is not necessarily the case. They heard the session ended and I bet heard about the new one under guard. You think they spent all that time away and then for no reason stopped?
In your scenario where the Republicans suck but the Democrats suck just as much, what’s the end solution. Like if you Really think that who are you voting for next time? Starting your own party? Just sitting it out and complaining online? I think that’s why people are down voting these posts.
It’s just trashing the victims in this case. No one thinks they should have gone back but realistically they had to go home to their families at some point. Also Texas State Congress people aren’t considered a full time job so I am pretty sure some of them had jobs they need to go back to at some point to pay their bills. They are constrained by the same system we all are.
Also the broader plan is that other democratic states will be redistricting now to offset the change.
The end solution is to kick both of these corrupt parties to the curb and replace them with people who’ll actually work to represent the American people. Anything less is just a continuation of all this nonsense and the ratchet effect of things constantly getting worse and never improving.
These Texas legislators aren’t victims here. They’re wealthy people who could afford to run for office in one of the largest states in the nation. They chose to run as public representatives but are doing anything but. You make it sound like they’re part time McDonalds employees who live paycheck to paycheck and can’t afford to miss a shift or they’ll be out on the street.
The broader plan here is for both of these private parties to gerrymander their states, shutting out any sort of competition, and people here are cheering it on like it’s a good thing. This is the same warped mentality that had supposed leftists cheering for genocide and trying to dogpile on anyone who spoke out against it just this last November. The same warped mentality that has people consistently voting against their own best interests while mocking “the other side” for doing the exact same thing. You’re witnessing two conquerors divvying up their spoils not two enemies duking it out.
Regardless of how terrible the Republican party is, it doesnt make Democrats the good guys, and they keep showing us time and time again that they’re perfectly fine betraying the American people for their, and their wealthy master’s, own personal gain.
I’m all for changing the way elections work in this country. First past the post is an objectively terrible way to do democracy, and there are more than a few better systems available.
But how do you get to those systems, and what do you do in the meantime? Sure, third party candidates can sometimes squeak by in smaller local races, and they should! That’s a great way to build up power and credibility and try to make larger changes! But that process is not going to happen overnight, and something has to be done in the meantime. That’s where harm reduction and choosing your opposition tells us we must vote for Democrats if a viable alternative is not available. You can plan to break Democrats’ duopoly of power with Republicans, but until that day comes you’ve got to acknowledge the political realities and that you would rather oppose a Democrat in power than a Republican in power.
Unless you’re an accelerationist who wants things to get worse, faster, so that a collapse or civil war will happen sooner, in which case I’m not sure we’ve got much of anything we’ll agree on.
*with help from the Texas Democrats who promised not to help them
who they put the dems under guard to keep from leaving the state.
