Need to record my calls without announcing it to the other party. I need it for iphone only. Can’t use a second phone/recorder. What could you recommend?

Is it legal? Here in France I think one is legally bound to warn the other person if they’re recording a conversation (and that’s a good thing, imho)

      Depends on the location.

There exists “one party consent” recording laws that mean that as long as anyone involved in the conversation consents to being recorded, the entire conversation can be recorded. But it also requires that you are only talking to someone else in the same one party consent area.

For example, if you lived in Virginia, you could record a conversation with someone else that lives in Virginia without informing them. But if you called someone in Illinois you’d have to tell them, even if the call and recording started in Virginia.

Most recording apps probably prefer to not have to keep track of all the legalities and just prefer to notify everyone, so they don’t get sued.

Agree with what you are saying. From outside of the US different laws govern how this is done. Some countries are one party and some are two party

In the US it’s really convoluted.

In some cases the state you are calling TO has the say. In some cases the law the state you are calling FROM has the say as to question if you can record.

It depends on how state laws are wrote. It also depends on certain court decisions. It also depends on certain federal laws and certain federal court decisions.

This helps to explain it a little better

It’s state-by-state in the US. Some states allow it if just one person wants to record a call. The others require both/all people to know and approve. The fun part is when somebody in a one-party state calls somebody in a two-party state…

(also France) I think you have to warn only if the recording is going to be share to other people (like hotline are recording to review it later, probably to check on the employee)

I think you can record anythingwithout notice, but you can’t publish it, or share it with somebody else

A lawyer told me that recording conversation with your employer is legal, even unannounced, so I guess the same apply here. And it’s usable in court (so you can share it with your legal team)

You can search around for “Bluetooth speaker call recorder.” They pair with any device over Bluetooth and act as both passthru as well as recorder. There also used to be ones that worked as wired headsets. No apps needed.

However, be aware you need to be in a location that allows two-party consent-free recording.

Sorry, I don’t know of one for iPhone, iPhones are fairly locked down anyway. But a cheap £10 Nokia brick has call recording without announcements, if that’s at all useful.

  • Don’t know about iPhones but by default on all of the Android phones I’ve had other than the first one its blocked. There’s still call recorder apps in the Playstore but they don’t work. Not sure if it’s only blocked in my country because its illegal if you don’t inform the other party and allowed in others but I imagine its just easier to block it everywhere. I believe you can root the device or use a custom rom to allow it.
