That’s probably true for a lot of these outrages. I don’t believe for a moment that the recent bullshit where people suddenly realized that Superman was technically an immigrant just days before a new Superman movie opened was genuine.
i mean it was still awful, but it was awful as a movie rather than as a statement, which is what people were complaining about before release. it had no statement, becaise it was like 90% ad-libbed
First movie that came to mind was Ghostbusters (2016). So much anger leading up to release only for it to end up not being worth talking about.

I wonder if it really didn’t work. Without all the shitstorm, nobody would have noticed or cared about the movie.
I’m pretty sure a lot of the people who watched it did so to see what all the fuss was about.
